YouTube Thumbnail & Banner Size Guide (2026)

A YouTube thumbnail is an advert for your video that has to work at postage-stamp size. The size rules are simple. What trips people up is the file-size limit, and the parts of a channel banner that get cut off on some screens. Here is what to use, and how to hit it.

Some recent guides report that YouTube now recommends higher-resolution thumbnails, up to 4K, and accepts larger files from a computer. Sources disagree on the details, so 1280 × 720 and under 2 MB remains the safe choice — it works on every upload path.

Thumbnails: design for small

  • Make it readable at tiny size. Few words, large lettering, strong contrast. Most viewers see it about as big as a stamp.
  • Keep the bottom-right corner clear. YouTube overlays the video length there.
  • Use a clear focal point — a face, an object — rather than a busy scene.
  • Choose the format by content. JPG is smallest for photographic thumbnails; PNG keeps text edges crisp but produces bigger files.

Getting a thumbnail under 2 MB

A 1280 × 720 image is usually well under 2 MB as a JPG, but a detailed PNG can exceed it. Set the dimensions and the 2 MB cap together and the tool lowers the quality only as far as it has to.

Channel banners: the safe area

The banner is displayed differently on phones, tablets, desktops and TVs. Only the central area — about 1546 × 423 pixels — is visible on every device, so keep logos, names and text inside it. The rest of the 2560 × 1440 canvas is background that extends to fill larger screens.

Getting the file ready, step by step

  1. Design or crop at 16:9. For a photograph, use the Widescreen ratio in the crop tool.
  2. Resize and cap the size in one pass: the thumbnail page sets 1280 × 720 under 2 MB, and the banner page sets 2560 × 1440 under 6 MB.
  3. Check the before/after slider, especially any text.
  4. Download and upload it in YouTube Studio.

Frequently asked questions

1280 × 720 pixels in a 16:9 ratio, at least 640 pixels wide, and under 2 MB.

What size is a YouTube channel banner?

2560 × 1440 pixels is recommended, with 2048 × 1152 as the minimum, and a limit of 6 MB.

Why is my channel banner cut off?

Different devices display different parts of it. Only the central safe area of about 1546 × 423 pixels shows everywhere, so keep important content inside it.

Why is my thumbnail rejected?

The most common causes are a file over the size limit, an unsupported format, or an image that is too small. Resize it to 1280 × 720 and keep it under 2 MB.
