Where 413 × 531 comes from
The most common passport photo size in the world is 35 × 45 mm, used for the UK, the EU, Australia and many other countries. At 300 DPI, which is the usual print resolution, 35 mm is about 413 pixels and 45 mm is about 531 pixels. So “passport photo size in pixels” usually means 413 × 531. A US passport photo is different: it is 2 × 2 inches, which is 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI.
| Photo size | At 300 DPI | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 35 × 45 mm | 413 × 531 px | UK, EU, Australia and many others |
| 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm) | 600 × 600 px | United States |
| 40 × 50 mm | 472 × 591 px | Some countries and applications |
These are the common sizes. Each country and each application sets its own rules, including the background colour and the proportion of the frame the face must fill. Always check the official instructions for the application you are making.
Resizing without distorting your face
- Drop your photo on this page. The 413 × 531 size is already selected.
- Crop so that your head is centred and fills the right amount of the frame. Do not stretch the picture to fit; it changes how your face looks and can get the photo rejected.
- Download the result. If the portal also has a file-size limit, add it in the same pass.
Digital uploads versus printed photos
Pixels matter when you upload a photo; millimetres matter when you print one. Many online applications ask for a size in pixels and a maximum file size, such as 600 × 600 pixels and under 240 KB for a US visa photo. Print shops want the physical size and a resolution of at least 300 DPI. The guide on pixels, DPI and resolution explains how they fit together, and the one on passport and visa photos for digital upload goes through the requirements.
