100% private — your files never leave your device

Remove location and EXIF data from a photo

Drop a photo to see what it reveals (where it was taken, the camera, the date) and download a clean copy. The picture itself is not re-compressed.

Private by design

Every transformation runs in your browser. We could not see your images if we wanted to.

What is hidden inside a photo

Every photo from a phone or camera carries a block of information called EXIF metadata, written into the file alongside the picture. It usually includes the date and time the photo was taken, the make and model of the device and the camera settings. Most importantly, when location services are on, it often includes GPS coordinates, accurate enough to identify the street or the building. The picture looks innocent, but the file can tell a stranger where you live, where your children go to school or when you are away from home.

Where it actually becomes a risk

Large social networks generally strip location data from the version other people can download, but not every place you send a photo does:

  • Email attachments are sent exactly as the file is.
  • Messaging apps that send an image as a document or “original” keep the metadata.
  • Forums, marketplaces, classified ads and small websites often store the file as uploaded, so anyone who downloads it can read the location.
  • Shared cloud links typically preserve the original file.

Selling something from home is the classic case. A photo of the item, uploaded to a listing, can reveal the address it was taken at.

How to clean a photo

  1. Drop the photo on this page. The tool shows what it contains: where it was taken, the camera and the date.
  2. Download the clean copy. The metadata is removed and the picture itself is not re-compressed, so it looks exactly the same.
  3. Share the clean copy, not the original.

What is kept, and what is removed

ItemAfter cleaning
GPS locationRemoved
Date, time, camera and phone modelRemoved
Camera settings (exposure, ISO and so on)Removed
The image itselfUnchanged: not re-compressed, nothing lost
Colour profile and orientationKept, so the photo looks and faces the same way

Turning location off at the source

You can also stop the problem at the start. On an iPhone, open Settings, then Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Camera, and choose “Never”. On Android, open the camera app’s settings and turn off the option to save or tag location. You then do not have to clean each photo, but photos you took earlier still contain what they were taken with, so cleaning remains useful. Note that a screenshot of a photo has no location of its own, since it is a new image.

The cleaning happens in your browser: the photo is read on your device and never uploaded, which is the right way to treat a file you are cleaning for privacy. If you also want to shrink the file for sharing, see the guide on reducing image size without losing quality.
