Resize an image for a Facebook link preview

Get your photo to 1200 × 630 pixels — the size Facebook recommends for a link preview. It is already set below, and nothing is uploaded.

The picture that appears when you share a link

When a link is posted on Facebook, the site’s preview image is shown above the title. It is shown wide, at about 1.91:1, and the recommended size is 1200 × 630 pixels. A picture of the wrong shape is cropped from the centre: a tall image loses its top and bottom, and the part that is lost may be the part that mattered. This is the image people see before they decide whether to click, so it is worth getting right.

Resizing to 1200 × 630

  1. Drop your image on this page. The 1200 × 630 size is already selected.
  2. Crop to the shape, keeping the important part inside the frame, or fit the whole picture on a plain background.
  3. Download it and use it as the Open Graph image on your page, or upload it with your post.

Tips for a preview that gets clicks

  • Keep text away from the edges. Different places crop the preview slightly. Keep any words well inside the picture.
  • Use a clear focal point. The image is small in the feed, so one strong subject beats a busy scene.
  • Keep it under about 1 MB. A large image slows the page that is being previewed and does not look any better.
  • Use a larger image for sharp displays. An image at least 1200 pixels wide holds up on high-density screens.

Facebook caches link previews. After you change an image, you may need to ask Facebook to re-fetch the page before the new one appears.

The same 1.91:1 shape works for many other platforms’ link cards. See the Facebook image size guide for profile, cover and ad sizes, and the LinkedIn banner page if you need a wide header instead.
