A very wide, very short space
A LinkedIn profile banner is 1584 × 396 pixels, a 4:1 ratio, which is four times wider than it is tall. That surprises people: a normal landscape photo is much taller than that, so uploading one means a thin strip is cut from it. To get a banner that looks intentional, start from a wide image or design, and decide which strip you want to show.
Making a banner from an ordinary photo
- Drop your image on this page. The 1584 × 396 size is already selected.
- Position the crop on the part you want to show: a skyline, an office, a product line. Landscapes with a clear horizontal band work best.
- Download and upload it as your background photo. The file limit for a banner is 8 MB, which a correctly sized image is far below.
What the profile photo covers
On a profile page your round profile picture overlaps the lower-left part of the banner. On phones the banner is also cropped slightly at the sides. So:
- Keep logos and text away from the lower-left corner. The profile picture sits on top of it.
- Keep important content towards the centre or right. That area stays visible on desktop and mobile.
- Leave a margin around the edges. Phones crop more aggressively than desktops.
- Keep text short. A banner is read at a glance, and small type becomes illegible.
A banner is also a good place for one clear message: what you do, or who you help. If you need a square image for your picture instead, see LinkedIn profile picture. The LinkedIn image size guide covers company pages and posts too.
